Cuevas del Almanzora. Course 95/96

This compilation includes favourite all time romantic songs: "As times goes by" is the famous soundtrack of "Casablanca", the song that Sam plays again for Ingrid Bergman and Humprey Boggart , "Summertime . was composed by the American Gershwin and belongs to an opera set in the South in slave times.

"I want to be loved by you" was originally recorded by Marilyn Monroe.

Casuality has played a part in the choosing of the versions, but the result is refreshingly unorthodox . Many of the singers are well know dead people like Armstrong and Elvis; but others, like Snead O’Connor, are still in their twenties, together with Peter Gabriel and Brian Ferry, they belong to the pop-rock era but have paid tribute to their elder recording their own versions . La Lupe is a Mexican old singer who is the interpreter of many of Almodovar’s favourites, do you remember "Teatro" from "Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios?" . Her English pronunciation may be doubtful but not the vitality of her interpretation .

Jean Stevenson at her Pedagogical Concert for Granada Greta Jornadas in 1995 first inspired me to put together several all time songs with their worksheets. In fact, "As times goes by" and "Smoke gets into your eyes" worksheets have been copied from the hand outs she provided there. Some of the "treatments" she applied to other songs I have applied here to different songs. "Wonderful world" Tasksheet comes from Maite Roura. The phonetical trnscription of "Unchained Melody" was made by Carlos Juarez.

Breathe deep the gathering gloom oscuridad
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Small cheap apartments with a single room
another day uselessly spent
Impassionate lovers wrestle
Tipo de lucha libre, (metaphor )
As one lonely man cries for love
But has none
New mother picks up and suckles her seed
amamanta su semilla
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb rules the night Refers to the moon
Removes the colours from our sight
red is grey and yellow, white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion.

Match the two parts of the song, first read the words and think what parts can go together, then listen to the song to see if you were right

And now the purple dust
Steals across the meadows
High up in the sky
Always remind me

You wander down the lane
Leaving me a song
Love is now that
The music of the years

Sometimes I wander I spend
Dreaming of the song
And I am once again
When our love
And each kiss

But that was
Now my consolation
Beside a garden wall
Your eyes
The nightingale
A paradise

Though I dream
In my heart
My stardust melody

that we’ll part
the little stars climb
of my heart
of twilight time

gone by
of yesterday
that will not die
and far away
my reverie

with you
the lonely night
the melody
an inspiration
was new

where roses grew
tells its fairy tale
and my eyes
when stars are bright
is in the stardust of a song
long ago

it will remain
the melody of love’s refrain
in vain

Cheek to cheek Louis Armstrong & Aretha Franklyn

Sing along and pronounce the long vowels: /a:/, /i:/, /u:/, /o:/

Heaven , I’m in heaven

                        /i:/                   /a:/          /i:/
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak

           /i:/                                       /i:/
And I seem to find the happiness I seek

                                                     /i:/        /i:/
When we’re out together dancing cheek to cheek

Yes, heaven , I’m in heaven

                                              /o:/    /i:/
And the cares that hung around all week

Seem to vanish like a go gambler’s luckiest trick

                                                       /i:/       /i:/
When we’re out together dancing cheek to cheek

Oh I’ d love to climb a mountain

             /i:/                 /i:/
And to reach the highest pea

But it doesn’t thrill me half as much

                       /i:/     /i:/
As dancing cheek to cheek

Oh, Id love to go a fishing

In a river or a creek

But I don’t enjoy it half as much

                      /i:/    /i:/
As dancing cheek to cheek

Now , mamma dance with me

               /a:/             /u:/
I want my arms around you

          /a:/              /u:/                  /u:/
This charm about you will carry me through to heaven
